Massimo literally means "Big" - and Massimo Rioja delivers monumental flavor. The old world traditions of Spain's most beloved wine meet new world style and technology for a lush, fruit-foward wine that reflects its heritage and the prestige vineyards where it was meticulously grown.

Vintage Report
The 2010 growing season was characterized by a rainy spring, followed by warm summer days. The spring rains affected fruit set, leading to a smaller harvest than expected; having fewer berries per vine created healthy fruit with even maturity and excellent concentration.

Viticulture
The Massimo vineyard is located in Viana, in the Rioja Baja subregion in the southeast end of the Rioja appellation. The team pays careful attention to canopy management and controlled irrigation, utilizing soil humidity sensors, local weather stations and daily plant growth data. Modern, sustainable methods and a respect for the natural surroundings are paramount. The grapes are 100% hand-picked.

Winemaking
The crushed grape must fermented for seven days at an average temperature of 80 degrees F. After fermentation, the wine macerated with the skins for an additional five days; it was then racked off into a combination of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. The wine aged for three months, with 20% in new American oak and 20% new French oak.

Tasting note
Brilliant garnet in color, Massimo Rioja is a medium-bodied, lushly textured wine with a fruit-foward, new world style. Exuberant raspberry and cherry notes are scented with herbs and a touch of vanilla on the lingering finish.

Pairing
Versatile with food, enjoy Massimo Rioja with tapas, roast pork, savory chickpea and chorizo stew, savory chickpea and chorizo stew, whole grilled fish stuffed with rosemary and onions, or ripe Brie and Manchego cheeses.
